Jason didn’t know why he had agreed to come to this. Scratch that. Yes, he knew exactly why he had agreed. Sarah had said that Melanie was coming, and the thought of her spending a Saturday night chatting with other guys meant the thought of sitting around his parents’ house and wondering what she was doing would be unbearable. Even more unbearable than listening to his mother drop hints about him coming back to Oyster Bay and joining his dad at the clinic.

He knew he should feel bad for Melanie that the line-up of guys was a list of duds. And he knew he should feel bad that pretty much every woman in the room was going to list him as a match. He couldn’t list any of them. Sure, Tiffany had been pretty, and Jen had been funny, and he could maybe see himself getting to know a few of the others better, too, but his heart wasn’t in it. It never was, and that was just the problem. He’d go on dates over the years, try to keep an open mind and forge a connection, but all he could think about was the one person who understood him and knew him best, and didn’t see him in a romantic light.

How was that for bitter irony?

Instead, it was easier to be single, to immerse himself in his work. When he came back to town, all the feelings stirred up again. Once he was back in Boston he’d settle into his routine. It wouldn’t bug him so much anymore.

But it would still be on his mind.

Finally, Melanie slid into the chair opposite him and gave him a wide-eyed look that made him burst out laughing. “I take it that this hasn’t been your idea of a perfect Saturday night?”

Her eyes drooped as she looped her handbag onto the back of her chair. “I think my perfect Saturday night would have been a quiet night with a bottle of wine and a hot plate of fettuccine Alfredo. And something chocolate for dessert.”

“Sounds ideal,” he said. Far more relaxing than the grind of making small talk with over a dozen women, too.

“That’s our plan for next time then, if Sarah ever tries to rope us into this again.”

“I’d like that,” he said, and then, catching her eye, he cleared his throat.

“Do you think Sarah had any luck?” she asked, glancing down the table at her friend, who seemed a little more subdued than she’d been on the car ride over, when she was frantically combing her hair and touching up her lipstick.

“Not sure. How were the guys?” He didn’t want to know almost as much as he wanted to brace himself. Melanie was often single, but she also had boyfriends at times. Relationships that never went anywhere and never had a chance of going anywhere and that had been obvious and comforting. Sure, he didn’t like the idea of her dating Doug, and he definitely didn’t love the way the guy hurt her, but he also knew that Doug wasn’t a threat.
